"BETRAYED IN THE OCTAGON " LP (NO FUN)

"this one ought to have the dyed-in-the-wool lifer of no fun produkt a bit perplexed ; rather than the “harsh walls” of recent entries by the rita & carlos giffoni, the tone here is much closer to a love scene in a classic john woo movie and/or the early-80s poly-synth wave of home-studio electronic music than anything even remotely from the harsh noise sector ... for one, there are melodies ; lots of them, along with big ‘old sweeping arpeggios offering an emotional range rarely heard in this renaissance of “cold electronics” ... sure there’s the stray interplanetary transmission and/or terry riley-esque echo-line burner, but by far the most memorable sections are when daniel lets his fingers do the walking, offering a fine blend of tonal harmony reminiscient of vangelis, the aforementioned michael gibbs, or even joe zawinul ... daniel’s on something of a fast-track at the moment after relocating from cambridge here to brooklyn last year ; this is his first real mass-market release, and it’s the one to check out. highly recommended !!!"
